App Icon Design Best Practices: A 2026 Guide for Play Store & App Store
Your icon is the single most-viewed pixel in your brand. Here's how to design one that holds up at 40 × 40 and still says something.
The icon shows up in search results, Spotlight, notifications, and your user's home screen. It needs to work at 1024 × 1024 for the store and at 40 × 40 in search. Most indie icons fail the second test.
Size first, style second
Design the icon at 1024 square, then zoom it out to 40 pixels and stare. If it's unreadable — too many letters, too much detail, low contrast — it's not done.
One visual idea per icon
An icon is not a poster. Pick one mark, one color system, and one level of depth. The best icons in the top grossing charts do essentially one thing visually.
Common pitfalls
- Using your full wordmark. Icons are not wordmarks.
- Gradient on gradient on gradient. One gradient, tops.
- Transparency. Both stores reject transparent iOS icons.
- Off-center compositions. Looks wrong cropped into circles for Android.
Icon + screenshots as a system
The icon color should echo through your first screenshot's background. Users scroll past your icon to your screenshots in about two seconds; visual continuity lifts install rate.
